Great Ideas for Kitchen Lighting

Although it can be an easy element to overlook, lighting sets the mood in a room. While there are many tried and true lighting options, consider taking a step back to consider more unique and impressive lighting options for your home.

  • Over a kitchen island or large dining room table, nothing quite beats a chandelier. While the style options are endless, make sure to go with one that matches up nicely to the size of the island or table over which it will hang. You don’t want to keep any dinner guests in the dark!
  • Industrial lighting goes well with clean, utilitarian kitchens and really grabs your eye. Mount an industrial sconce on each side of your sink as functional statement pieces.
  • For the ultimate unique lighting experience, go vintage. Elegant and ornate pendants can beautifully highlight any room of the house

While lighting fixtures throughout your house don’t need to — and shouldn’t — all be exactly the same, ensure they work in harmony. If you have an open floorplan or certain rooms that naturally flow together, make sure fixtures line up and have similar styles.

Color Palette Influences from San Francisco Showhouse

Are you currently considering a new color palette for a room in your home?  Well recently came across some images from the San Francisco Decorator Showcase which opened a few weeks ago and we must say it is a very good influence. One of the main things that can be used as an influence are the color palettes featured in the various rooms. Each room includes a mixture of colors ranging from neutral, bright, dark, and earthy. And just as any good design follows they each have their own distinctive style, yet they work together as a whole.

If you are looking for a new color palette for your interiors allow yourself to be influenced by those from the San Francisco Decorator Showcase…

42nd Symphony Designers’ Showhouse Set to Open

For 42 years the Kansas City Symphony Alliance, a nonprofit volunteer organization which promotes an interest in classical music throughout the Kansas City area, has hosted their annual fundraiser the Symphony Designers’ Showhouse. Known as Kansas City’s biggest home makeover project the showhouse is the place for the latest in interior and landscape design.

This  year the interiors and landscape of the showhouse were designed by 28 professionals located throughout the Kansas City area that include craftsmen, designers, manufacturers, and furniture builders to name a few. Aside from touring the showhouse and viewing the creative designs other events will accompany the tour. Thursday nights will feature live music, food and drinks. If you are in need of design inspiration and entertainment swing by the Symphony Designers’ Showhouse for a taste of both.

As an interior designer myself, and having participate in this event, I know how much work goes into making these rooms look grand enough to be on tour.  I love to walk through these stately homes and see how they have been transformed in a very short time…it is truly magical.
Grab your best friend and have a girls-day-out, it is a treat, and you never know what inspirational message you just might find around the corner!! If you are inspired by the tour just give The Decorative Touch a call and let us help you further develop your ideas!

Add Sparkle to Your Kitchen Design with a Chandelier

Does your kitchen seem to be missing that little something extra? If you’ve been finding the design in your kitchen to be slightly drab lately we have the perfect pick-me-up. New lighting can always transform the look of a room, so why not add sparkle to your kitchen with a chandelier? We know you’re probably thinking chandeliers are typically found in more formal rooms, but work just as well in kitchens.

No matter the design of your kitchen be it formal or casual, a chandelier can bring the slightest taste of elegance, and not to mention a unique look. If you favor over the top design go for a large, elaborate chandelier. If you prefer a more simple design you can achieve the look with two mini chandeliers.  Take a look at these well executed designs and tell us what you think.

Trends in New American Style for 2011

It’s safe to say that the American style of interiors has evolved over the years in an extremely good way. Whether discussing the design in the kitchen or the family gathering room the new American style is much more relaxed, inviting and personal while continuing to exude a simple elegance. A group of designers recently sat down and shared their take on the top trends in new American style for 2011 with House Beautiful and they came up with…

Using bold colors to freshen traditional furniture.

Livable great rooms that are both open and intimate.

Dining alcoves for gatherings that are cozy and dressed-up.

Mixing multiple design styles together in one space.

Modern interiors that also feature the look of a soft design.Images from House Beautiful

Kansas City St. Patrick's Day

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the 38th Annual Parade

Kansas City St. Patrick's DayWhether you have Irish roots or not, come out this Thursday and celebrate with the rest of Kansas City at the 38th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This year’s theme boosts the title, ‘No Small Potatoes: A Tribute to the Wee Irish.’ As one of the largest celebratory parades this year’s guests will enjoy large floats reminiscent of the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, leprechauns and a shower of lucky charms. Just as the theme for this year’s parade pays tribute to the wee Irish the Wee Irish Village will include a moonwalk, face painting, balloon animals and much more. Be sure to head out this Thursday for a good time in Kansas City and honor the Irish with the community. If you can’t make it to the parade watch the live broadcast on Fox 4.

  • What: 38th Annual Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade
  • When: Thursday March 17 @ 11:30am

Blue and White Dish Decor

We’ve all visited a friend’s house or passed through the fine china section of a department store and gushed over the classic blue and white china. If you’ve been contemplating adding the timeless dinnerware to your home now is the time. The classic blue and white color combination is heavily in demand and probably not in the way you think. Instead of displaying your dishes in a china cabinet decorate your home with them.

By displaying the dishes whose colors represent the serene sky and sea throughout your home you can bring in a true feeling of warmth and comfort. You can arrange the dishes in a mosaic to be featured on the wall or as part of a vignette to be displayed on your coffee or entryway table. Not crazy about the idea of using dishes to decorate? Take the design and color of the dishes and translate them into your room instead. Check out these examples and let us know what you think!
