The Round Mirror: The Bathroom

The Round Mirror

We found lots of round mirrors, all placed in many different rooms in the house when we searched the Web recently. In the home, the round mirror is almost like eye candy, drawing you closer simply because of its aesthetic.  I’m a fan of round mirrors for interior designer because of the clean, simple look of the shape. Round mirrors are a great add to an elegant space. The round mirror is very versatile in every home, whether you place the mirror over a fireplace, in a bathroom, over a bed, a window seat, in a hallway or the living room.  The possibilities are unending. And the simple, eye-catching, spherical shape is classic. I’ve placed below a few excellent examples of how the round mirror is being used lovely-looking homes.

Chic Basements

Basements can be cozy, chic and captivating as well. Gone are the days where a basement is an at-home, over-sized storage unit.  As we rummaged through designer pictures on the Web, we found some photos that are the paradigm of  enjoyable basement living. Look through these examples, showing how to take an underused space of your home — the basement — and unveil its potential. These spaces utilize stunning color palettes, cozy furnishings and functional layouts to create the basement of the homeowner’s dream.

This basement radiates warmth from the vibrant red hue on its walls that uses a chili-pepper red glass backsplash. The wide-plank hardwood is a nice complimenting, modern touch.

A neutral palette is the main decor for this multi-functional basement.  Here, this basement not only encourages relaxation with the comfortable furniture and media center, but the area also touts a workout zone.

Need a place for your teenagers and their friends to hang and be safe? Then this basement is ideal for you and them.

Reach out to The Decorative Touch, and we can help you transform your basement into a glamorous haven you will enjoy.

Rustic, Traditional, and a Touch of Modern Décor

You’ve heard the old mantra, “Opposites attract.” Believe it or not, this saying couldn’t be more true than in interior design. In fact, I love the mix  of rustic and traditional, with just a bit of modern style infused. I saw a lovely home in the magazine Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles that was the ideal paradigm of this concept. These photos illustrate  a great mix of styles, merging today with yesterday and modern with timeless.

Going Green: Adding Green in Your Home

Do you want a fresh mix of color and great pattern? Then think about adding the color green as a theme in your home decor. Any upscale, timeless home will embrace the color. You can use the color green in many rooms throughout the house. I’ve collected several gorgeous pictures from interior design blogs that illustrate my point. Hopefully when you finish reading this post, you’ll be consider having me help you go green — literally.  Let’s start by looking at the sunny breakfast room, infused with green by using the green chairs.

And I’ve always loved to use the kitchen island as a way to add a pop of color as you’ll see in my recent blog The Extraordinary Kitchen Island. The green island and green color on the ceiling (another technique I love to incorporate) works well.

Finally, this living room is stunning, using the combination  green and blue.

Kansas City Home and Garden: Fit for Family

The Decorative Touch Featured in Kansas City Homes and Gardens Magazine

We are beyond elated to be published in the Jan./Feb. issue of Kansas City Home and Garden. The article is entitled Fit for Family where the editors examine our task of designing the interior of a home adding 5,000 square feet to the already 5,500 square-foot space. The homeowners — who I have had the pleasure of working with a few years before— hired the Decorative Touch to work in tandem with the builder to not only increase living space but also focus on perpetual style that appeals to the family-centered nature of the owners. As the interior designer, I clearly understood the vision for the home, which I reiterated in the article.

“Everything in the house was conceived to enhance family life,”  Janine Terstriep says. “When the homeowners were ready to do a significant renovation to the existing house, they knew exactly what they wanted.”

It takes a great team to achieve this type of result on a home, from architect and builder to designer and homeowner. I was delighted to be part of the talent that made this all come together. To read the entire article, grab the Jan./Feb. issue of KCH&G, or just click on the screen grab below.

Decorative Touch Designer Meets Candice Olson

I was fortunate enough to be invited to an exclusive event where one of my favorite and well-known interior designers, Candice Olson, spoke live about her career, design inspirations and trends. I was tickled pink to be one of about 100 people lucky enough to hear this awesome, genuine and talented woman share her stories. She is not only talented, sophisticated and inspiring, but she is also warm, inviting and a pleasure to be around.

I was more impressed by her humility as a designer who has certainly “made it” to the top. She was willing to share and still listen to suggestions, as she is developing a wonderful line of furnishings with Norwalk Furniture, a line we carry and believe is the best value in today’s market as well.

Take a peek at norwalkfurniture.com to see what Candice has in store for you for 2012!

How to Let Your Home Make You Smile

A space can feel more relaxed if it includes curvy furniture.

Your home should be a place you love—a place that makes you smile—and interior design plays an essential role in making this happen. Naturally, we enjoyed House Beautiful’s recent slideshow “10 Ways to Make Your Home Happier.” Here are a few of their ideas we really agree with for bringing more joy into your home:

  • Surround yourself with things that really speak to you.
  • Good design starts in the entryway so you feel happy right when you walk in the door. Don’t be afraid to add splashes of color in this space.
  • Include pieces with curved lines for a welcoming feel; too many harsh angles aren’t as inviting.

Visit House Beautiful to read all their tips for creating a happy home. What have you done lately to let your home put a smile on your face?

Design by The Decorative Touch Featured in KCH&G

A luxurious bathroom designed by Janine Terstriep of The Decorative Touch is featured in the October issue of Kansas City Homes and Gardens, and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

Like many homeowners these days, our clients sought a relaxing bathroom retreat, and we created exactly what they were looking for. The blue and cream color palette sets the space apart from the rest of the home, offering the ambiance and serenity of a spa. If you can’t stop eyeing the mosaic staircase, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most luxe features of the space, in addition to the elegant drapes and stunning chandelier.

Thank you so much to Kansas City Homes and Gardens for featuring our design! Pick up a copy of the magazine at a local newsstand or check out the digital edition online and flip to pages 46-47 to see the spread and read the article.

4 Tips for Using Area Rugs in Home Design

Since writing about chevron floors earlier this week, we’ve had flooring on the mind. Now we want to look at how best to use area rugs. While perusing HGTV.com, we came across an excellent slideshow offering area rug-related advice. Here are some of the suggestions we especially agree with:

  1. Always consider your lifestyle before selecting a rug. A delicate area rug isn’t the best option for a family with children and pets.
  2. Area rugs can be used to define different spaces within an open, larger space, like a dining area and a living area.
  3. They’re also great for tying together a color palette. In fact, many designers will purchase the area rug before selecting furniture and accessories because it’s such a defining part of a space.
  4. The rug shouldn’t take up the entire floor. It’s always nice to see gorgeous hardwoods peeking through.

If you’d like an area rug expertly selected and incorporated into your space, contact The Decorative Touch in Lenexa, KS.
