100% Vintage: The Kitchen

100% Vintage

Vintage pieces are commonly used as accent pieces in upscale decor. We want to show you how vintage can be more than an accent piece and instead thought of as the ambiance for the entire home.

For example, let’s start with the kitchen featured below. The essence of an era gone by is reincarnated with a vintage sign, worn bar stools, white panels on the lower part of the walls, the stone-looking counter top and even the worn door and door knob. This kitchen is 100% vintage.

This stunning dining room boasts of an ornate chandelier, distressed pillar and cabinet, and a rough cream color theme. The unfinished wooden table and wide-plank hardwood floor bring the room together nicely, while the aged latter in the corner is a nice touch.

The bedroom furniture sets the vintage tone in this master suite. Grey, iron-looking accent pieces, analog clocks on the night stand and wall, and the aged books go well with the antique feel.

Tangerine Tango: 2012 Color of the Year

A new year means a new trend. The market leader in color Pantone Inc. says the 2012 color of the year is Tangerine Tango, a strikingly warm hue reminiscent of a sunset glowing in the distance. Tangerine tango dethrones the 2011 color of the year, honeysuckle, and brings interior designers a vivacious reddish orange that can add vigor and warmth to any home.

We couldn’t wait to share how you can you incorporate this friendly, inviting color into your everyday living space, giving off a dynamic energy with a few simple touches. Below are three ways The Decorative Touch suggests you can infuse tangerine tango into your home:

Accent Pieces
Accent pieces, such a decorative pillows, throws, or even art on your wall can bring in tangerine tango without over saturating the room. Used with other brilliant hues or neutrals such as taupe, the trend can bring in just the pop of reddish orange that you might be hesitant to utilize in other scenarios.

Patterned Fabrics
Include a simple chair or an ottoman with stripes, dots or even piercing paisleys colored tangerine tango to complement the furniture already in the room. Placing a piece designed with delicate touches of tangerine tango in the fabric makes an awesome transformation simple to do.  You can also buy a slip cover for existing pieces in the room.

A Coat of Paint

If you are a designing daredevil at heart, try painting the room tangerine tango. Whether painting an accent wall or even the ceiling, a few strokes of paint can go a long way. Not to mention, it’s both time and cost effective.

Dazzling Holiday Decor Raises Money for Breast Cancer

This time of year is the season of giving. The Holiday House, presented by Traditional Home, keeps this tradition alive and well. Back for the fourth year, breast cancer survivors and advocates created a holiday-themed designer show house to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The 2011 participants were some of the top names in interior design, and visitors viewed many rooms inspired by several different holidays, including Christmas, Mother’s Day and the Chinese New Year. We were galvanized from the showcases and decided to share some of our favorite rooms this season.

Designing the perfect Thanksgiving table

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, you likely have your plans all set. Maybe you are heading out of town (lucky you!) and someone else will be doing the cooking. But if you are in charge of the meal this year, you are probably starting to wrap up all of those last few to dos and are making a few of those important last-minute meal decisions like should I brine the turkey or baste? Scalloped or mashed potatoes? Pumpkin or Pecan pie? Hey, it’s hard choosing this time a year!

One thing that may be last on your list is table design. It’s easy to just throw on the same old table cloth, add a few candles, and call it done. But why not do something a little different this year that will surprise your guests? While you might be a little hesitant to try and pull off something too extravagant, you really don’t have to go overboard with the design. In fact, some of the best tablescapes are simple (you pretty much already know the color scheme) but it’s the details, like these adorable pinecone place cards, that can make the biggest impression. Just look at how the pumpkins in the image below make quite a visual statement.

Photo by Amanda Parker and family

There is nothing like Thanksgiving to make me take note of all the wonderful blessings in my life.  First and foremost, my children, as they are blossoming into adults; I grow more proud of them daily and enjoy spending as much time with them as they will allow!  My own family, as God has blessed me to be born into a richness of caring and loving people.  My career, which is ever changing, ever challenging, but the most rewarding and fulfilling place to spend my days.  And of course, my clients…for without you, I would not grow, learn and succeed.  You are the reason I do what I do, and I love my job.  Thank you all for your support!  I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving Day…

It’s all about family, friends, great food, and finding time to stop and treasure our blessings….Thank YOU!

A Glimpse of 2012 Home Accents…

Rarely do designers get the opportunity to visit a manufacturer in its own environment, but a couple weeks ago I was lucky enough to get away from my studio for a few days. I was invited to a favorite accessory supplier of mine called K&K Interiors in Sandusky, Ohio, and I got a glimpse of what 2012 would look like for home accents, holiday accessories and gifts. It was simply beautiful and inspirational! I was able to take a few photos of their showroom, and believe me, they just don’t do their products justice! But take a peek below and keep in mind that as hard as it is to imagine, spring is just around the corner!

Design Trends Emerge from What’s New, What’s Next

What’s New, What’s Next is an annual event at the New York Design Center that just had its third installment at the end of September. And although the event took place in New York, the emerging design trends are affecting decorating decisions across the U.S. Interior design blog The Editor at Large reported on the new trends that came out at the event, including:

  • More color is being incorporated into interiors, including through the use of beautiful artwork.
  • Mirrors are very “in” in design these days, especially with mirrored surfaces on a furniture piece.
  • Style is taking a turn for the masculine with many textiles looking similar to those in men’s clothing, as well as deeper color choices.
  • Design is getting to be more traditional again.

Décor Color Palette: Autumn’s in the Air

Over the years I have had clients moving to the Midwest from both coastlines, and I have helped them with the furnishing and decorating of their new Midwestern homes. Ironically, they have had trouble embracing the colors we use here due to the lasting impression of the coastal environments they have left behind. I totally understand that where you live has an effect on how you create the space that surrounds your interior! The great thing here is we experience the change of seasons, and much of our weather makes us feel like we want to wrap up in warmth—hence the warmer colors used in many of our interiors!

With the turning of the leaves in Kansas City, we know what will soon be approaching, and as we grab for those soft cozy throws draped over our sofas, we are happy to have the toasted caramels and rich browns around us to help us feel even warmer just by the nature of our painted walls and furnishings. Winters can be a little longer than we like, so it’s even more important to choose colors that “warm up” your space. Take a peek at these photos… even if winter lasts a while, you’ll feel nice and cozy at home!

From the orange-red ceiling to the wood floors, everything in this space works for “warm” decor. Red and orange accents blend nicely with neutral tan and brown furniture. The fireplace is also perfect for warming up on a chilly night.

This room also has the quintessential fall color scheme: deep oranges, yellows and browns. Small accents also contribute to warming up the space.

How have you incorporated “warmer” décor at home? Or does your home already have the perfect seasonal color scheme? Do share—we’d love to hear from you!
